We are excited and proud to now be able to offer our patients Veinwave™ treatment for small spider veins of the legs and face. Veinwave™ has been widely used in Europe for over ten years and is considered the “gold standard” for eliminating these small spider veins. It has just been approved by the FDA for use in the United States.

Red spider veins (referred to as thread veins in Europe) affect both men and women, most commonly in the face and legs – particularly the knee and ankle areas. These unsightly veins affect millions of people each year. They are not dangerous but are cosmetically unsightly. Until now there has been no totally effective and safe treatment. Injection therapy for the tiny veins on the cheeks and nose is technically quite difficult and not always effective. Laser therapy is often used by dermatologists and plastic surgeons, but is expensive, painful and of limited benefit for these veins.

The most exciting application for Veinwave™ is in the treatment of fine, red vessels complicating the condition rosacea. Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory condition that involves the face in many men and women. It is usually treated with topical medications that can improve some aspects of the problem, but often do not resolve the fine spider vessels that cause redness of the cheeks and nose. Veinwave™ treats the fine spider vessels and can markedly improve the appearance.

Veinwave™ is an electrical device that works by emitting high frequency thermal energy (a process known as thermo-coagulation) through a very fine probe. It causes the vein wall to collapse without affecting or damaging any of the surrounding tissues.

The discomfort is minimal and much less than with laser treatment and certainly more effective. It can be used on difficult-to-treat and sensitive areas such as the face/nose, knees and ankle/foot areas. It is equally effective in both light and dark skinned individuals. The treatment leaves no bruising and the results are instantaneous. No bandages or compression stockings are used. There are no sun exposure issues or limitations. There are no residual pigmentation issues that can complicate injection treatments. Patients can return to normal activities immediately after their 15-20 minute treatment. The procedure is safe and complications are rare. After a few days, small micro-crusts like a cat scratch will appear over the treated area. This is normal and will disappear after several weeks on their own.

Veinwave™ is used for small spider veins on the legs, face and ankles. Larger veins still are better treated with liquid or foam sclerotherapy. Depending on the size of the veins that need to be treated, a patient may benefit from BOTH Veinwave™ and sclerotherapy treatments. It should be noted that up to ten percent of patients complaining only of spider veins will have saphenous vein reflux. Ideally this should be corrected first (with VNUS Closure endovenous ablation) before the smaller veins are treated.
